Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY

The research center DESY is one of the leading accelerator centers worldwide in the research field structure of matter. DESY develops and builds large facilities for the acceleration of particles to extremely high energies. Scientists from all over the world do research at these racetracks. Physicists, chemists, geologists, biologists, medical and materials researchers use a special light from the accelerator to make visible structures and processes in the microcosm (research with photons). Particle physicists study the fundamental building blocks and forces in the universe.
A particular feature of DESY is the combination of particle physics and research with photons which is unique in Europe. Accordingly, there is a wide spectrum of research and collaboration with national and international partners. About 3000 scientists from 45 countries come to DESY every year to conduct research. The research program by far reaches beyond the facilities in Hamburg and Zeuthen. There is also a considerable participation of DESY in international major projects. Examples are the European X-ray Laser XFEL in Hamburg, the European proton accelerator LHC at CERN in Geneva, the international Antarctic neutrino telescope IceCube and the International Linear Collider ILC.

How to get to DESY:

DESY Hamburg Site, main entrance

By train
To Hamburg Altona station:
Continue by taxi, traveling time approx. 15-20 min.

Or continue by bus line 1 (direction Schenefelder Holt) directly to the main entrance of DESY (bus stop Zum Hünengrab/DESY), traveling time approx. 25 min.

Or continue by S-Bahn (local city train) line S1 or S11 (direction Blankenese/Wedel) to Othmarschen. Then go on with bus line 1 (direction Schenefelder Holt).
On foot: leave the city train station at the Waitzstrasse exit, turn right at the bottom of the stairs, turn left onto Waitzstrasse, right onto Gross Flottbeker Strasse and follow that road directly to DESY, walking time approx. 25 min.

By plane
From the Hamburg airport Fuhlsbüttel:
Continue by taxi, traveling time approx. 40-50 min.

Or continue with city train line S1 (direction Blankenese/Wedel) to Othmarschen station. Then go on with bus line 1 (direction Schenefelder Holt) to the main entrance of DESY (bus stop Zum Hünengrab/DESY).

By car
Exit the Autobahn (A7) at HH-Bahrenfeld. Arriving in Hamburg from the South: turn left onto the main road (Osdorfer Landstraße). Arriving in Hamburg from the North: turn right onto the main road (Osdorfer Landstraße). Then turn right onto Notkestraße. The main entrance of DESY is the second road on the left.

DESY Hamburg Site, side entrance
The side entrance of DESY is located on the Luruper Chaussee. The bus line 2 stops there (bus stop DESY). The side entrance is open for motorists from Monday till Friday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., and closed on weekends. It is open for pedestrians and cyclists at all times.
